The Stunning Paraiba Tourmaline
Discovered in 1987 by Heitor Dimas Barbosa beneath the Paraiba Hill in Brazil, Paraiba tourmaline’s striking neon blues and greens have electrified the gem world.
Caused by the presence of copper, Paraiba tourmaline appears in a range of hues including greenish blue, bluish green, green, blue, and violet with tremendous lustre and remarkable vividness. The gem’s extreme scarcity in both materials and sizes over 5 carats makes it be a particular fascination for the connoisseurs.
Since 2001, some shining blue-green tourmalines from Nigeria and Mozambique appeared on the market, becoming the new sources of this striking gem. Paraiba gems produced in Africa tend to be larger with quite a few stones over 5 carats found there. Because of their larger size, the African Paraiba tourmalines are more uniform in colour than their Brazilian counterparts. Those that come from Nigeria are mostly aqua and mint green in colour whilst those from Mozambique have the widest range of colour ranging from teal, fuchsia, deep violet, blue, aqua, and mint green.
This stunning 91.43-carat Mozambican Paraiba tourmaline is a true lure on account of its highly impressive size, vivid greenish blue hue and excellent purity. This is the largest Paraiba tourmaline ever offered at auction. With Kat Florence’s modern artistic design, this incredible creation is such a magnificent masterpiece.
